Clay Cool
In several parts of India, summers are characterised by scorching heat, hot winds (also known as loo), and extreme dehydration. However, while some of us can find relief from the heat by using ACs and refrigerators, low-income Indian households are often forced to fend for themselves in this heat with little scope of respite due to insufficient access to technologies such as refrigerators, ACs, and sometimes, even electricity.
Designed by our founder Sitara Gupta, Clay Cool is an innovative, affordable, and impactful solution to the lack of electricity, and thus, lack of refrigeration facilities amongst low-income rural and urban Indian communities. Clay Cool is a terracotta bottle with a bamboo bag, that relies on the natural process of evaporation to cool the water stored in it. Inspired by Mansukhbhai Prajapati’s design for MittiCool, Clay Cool is a product that truly brings together design thinking, vernacular design, and innovation to create a relevant and meaningful solution to the problem of lack of access to refrigeration technology faced by poor people from urban and rural areas of India.
